Mother of Pearl
Mother of pearl gets it’s name because it is the iridescent lining of shell where pearls can grow. Many early cultures living near the ocean used it extensively in jewelry and it became highly prized. Like other substances found in nature, mother of pearl develops irregularities as it forms making it prized by artisans. This stone is said to attract prosperity and provide protection from negative influences.
Red Onyx is actually formed of bands of chalcedony consisting of silica minerals, quartz and moganite. Onyx is usually colored, a process that first century naturalist, Pliny the Elder started using in ancient Rome. Onyx is found in Brazil, Uruquay, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, india and Madagascar. The red often appears as an orange color.
Black onyx is used by jewelers for it’s even deep black color. It is found in various regions of the world and the U.S. This stone is said to help release negative emotions such as sorrow and grief.
Calcite is transparent to opaque and can have bronze veining. It is a common component of sedimentary rocks formed from the shells of marine organisms and also occurs as a vein in hot springs. This stone is thought to provide healing and promote inner peace.
Dalmatian Jasper is found in Mexico and derived it’s name when miner’s noticed the resemblance to the pattern on a Dalmatian dog. It is quartz stone with spots of black and brown. The spots are black tourmaline and brown tourmaline. This stone is thought to encourage positive attitudes, good luck and happiness.
Gila Monster Jasper
Jasper is a form of chalcedony that comes in many color combinations stemming from the mineral content of the original sediment. It is an opaque rock. Various patterns arise in the formation and names relate to where it was found or what the colors resemble. The Gila Monster has bold orange stripes like those found in the stone.
