About African Blackwood
The African blackwood tree is a member of the rosewood family. It is a dense, lustrous wood that is fine grained with an even texture and is almost black in color. Considered to be an exotic species, it is native to the dry, savanna areas of Africa, particularly Tanzania and Mozambique. Each tree is small in stature, heavily branched and when in season is adorned with tiny clusters of sweet smelling white flowers. This very resilient timber has been highly valued for many centuries, especially by ancient Egyptians who utilized it for their tomb artifacts and East African tribes who still create intricate carvings from it. The blackwood’s tonal-harmonic quality makes it a frequently used material for high end woodwind instruments, particularly clarinets, oboes, flutes and bagpipes. Our selected wood pieces are initially cut by machine and then hand sanded and polished by our master woodcrafters.
